The influence of abiotic environmental factors on the development and fertility of Habrobracon hebetor

Abstract

Biological methods based on the use of environmentally friendly agents are currently considered to be a promising approach to crop protection. Entomophagous insects are on a special place in this regard. The current paper has presented the data on the laboratory breeding and propagation of the ectoparasite Habrobracon hebetor (Say, 1836), which is used to control lepidopteran pests on various agricultural crops. The purpose of the current work was to study the influence of abiotic environmental factors on the fertility and development of H. hebetor in laboratory conditions. The trial was conducted in accordance with the recommendations for the cultivation and use of the ectoparasite Habrobracon. The conducted research has allowed identifying optimal laboratory conditions for maintaining entomophagous insects. There has been found that the maximum lifespan of a female (16.8 days) is at an air temperature of 26–28°C (a 16-hour photoperiod). Also, when the temperature increases, the premature phases of Habrobracon larvaes decrease to 11.4–13.6 days. There has been established that the optimal conditions for oviposition are the temperature of 23–25°C and a 16-hour photoperiod. The air temperature increase to 26–28°C positively affects the survival rate of larvae (91.5%). The best conditions for pupal formation are 23–25°C and a 16-hour photoperiod.
